Wimbledon: The return of the Russians and Belarusians to the tournament and the asterisk
The push to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to attend Wimbledon appears to be gaining traction as organizers are reportedly ready to reverse last year’s decision.
Although we are almost four months away from Wimbledon, there is already a lot of talk about the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes.
Last year, the organizers decided not to take part in the retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine, which resulted in the tournament’s participants not being rated by the ATP and WTA.
This year, there is a communication channel between all sides, and there is great pressure to change the relevant decision.
As everything shows, the organizers of the historic tournament are expected to give the green light to the participation of Russian and Belarusian athletes under two conditions.
The first concerns their participation status, as they will compete without their country’s insignia, ie as independents. Let’s remember that something like this happened in other competitions.
Wimbledon organizers will not stop there as they will disqualify those athletes who supported or will support the invasion of Ukraine. In fact, there is a possibility that they will ask the Russian and Belarusian athletes to sign a document to ensure their participation.
The final decision is expected to be made within the next month and it remains to be seen what it will be like. We remind you that this year’s Wimbledon is scheduled to take place from July 3rd to 16th.
