25 year old American tennis player Francis TiafoeThe first-time Masters semi-final runner up at Indian Wells explained why he had previously failed to meet the high expectations of his fans.

“I have a very humble background. When I was 18-19 I was already in the top 100, they said I was going to do something about me, I was the American hope, blah blah. It was difficult. I wasn’t ready for this. I was young, I had money, I was enjoying life. And now I killed myself.

The main thing in front of me is that I saw my peers with whom I played in juniors: Rublev, Zverev, Tsitsipas. And what, I let them take all the money for a long time? I played with them, sometimes I beat them. But I lacked stability. And I decided that something had to change.

I love tennis too much to understand. I built a strong team, took responsibility and I’m trying to see how good I can be at this game. I owe him a lot,” says Tiafoe, ranking 16th in the world.

In the semi-finals, Tiafoe will face fifth-seeded Daniil Medvedev.
