All set for Indian Wells
(Indian Wells) Leylah Annie Fernandez’s short story at the Indian Wells Tennis Tournament offers a glimpse into her meteoric rise through the ranks of women’s professional tennis.
The 19-year-old Lavalloise will start the 2022 edition of the tournament at the 21and world level, having successfully defended his first WTA title in Monterrey, Mexico.
After benefiting from a bye in the first round which was given to the first 32 ranked players registered (she is 18and seeded), she will begin her journey in the desert this weekend against the winner of the duel between Amanda Anisimova and Emma Navarro. Fernandez also faced Navarro in the final of Roland-Garros among juniors in 2019.
Three years ago this week, the then 16-year-old Quebecer was far from ready to face the best in the world in the California desert.
So ranked 404and in the world, she had just lost in the first qualifying round of a minor tournament in Nishitama, Japan, whose prize pool was $25,000.
Then, two years ago this week, after strong showings at two Mexican tournaments lifted him to 120and world rank, she had received an invitation for the main draw in Indian Wells.
An invitation which she has never been able to take advantage of.
The tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic the day before the start of qualifying matches – the beginnings of a break that would last for five months in 2020 in professional tennis.
The magic of Monterrey
Then, exactly a year ago, when the Indian Wells tournament had just been postponed, Fernandez won his first WTA title in Monterrey. However, it happened behind closed doors.
“They had covered the seats with tarpaulins bearing the tournament logo. When I won, there were just a few volunteers and the ball attendants,” Fernandez recalled in an interview earlier this week.

Earlier this week, in Indian Wells, Leylah Annie Fernandez participated in the Eisenhower Cup, a charity mini-tournament disputed under the formula of decisive games.
The Indian Wells tournament was introduced in October last year, barely a month after Fernandez reached his first Grand Slam final at the US Open.
The Canadian showed up in Indian Wells in the top 30but she had not played since her brilliant performance in New York.
She lost in the third round, thereby ending her season. She is now back in the same place, having accomplished another feat.
Fernandez successfully defended her title in Monterrey last Sunday against a much tougher draw than in 2021. She saved five match points before beating Colombian Camila Osorio 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-6 (5).
And this time, the stands were full.
It was magical. Fans, everyone is aware that this sport is like a battlefield. We give everything we have, and we savor the moment.
Leylah Annie Fernandez
“Half the stadium took for me, and the other half for her. It felt like a soccer game, and I love it. It was good to feel that energy, to see people enjoying the moment. That’s why we play at this level, because we want everyone to feel that. »
Melbourne Blues
This triumph also allowed him to turn the page on his elimination in the first round of the Australian Open in January, against Australian Maddison Inglis.
“It was just one of those tournaments where everything goes wrong. Every athlete goes through these kinds of streaks. I just had to take a step back and understand what had happened,” Fernandez explained.
Everything went wrong. Nothing went as planned.

Fernandez took a few days off, cleared her mind, and returned to training when she was ready.
She briefly considered participating in the Dubai and Doha tournaments in February, in order to pick up the pace. But in the end, she and her trainer and father Jorge agreed to go with the original plan.
Fernandez begins the Indian Wells tournament in doubles Thursday evening with the French Alizé Cornet.
Expectations will be the same as usual.
“You have to take it one game at a time, and not think about the results,” she said. You have to have fun on the court, and hopefully good things will happen. »

WTA rankings. Where did Ukrainian tennis players finish in 2025?
On Monday, December 29, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) last updated the rating in 2025.
As in principle, there have been no significant changes since the end of the Final Tournament in November.
Thus, Aryna Sabalenka finished the season on top. Also in the top 5 were Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff, Amanda Anisimova and Elena Rybakina.
As for Ukrainian women, the country’s best tennis player in 2025 is 14th-ranked Elina Svitolina. She is followed by Marta Kostyuk (26th) and Dayana Yastremskaya (27th). Alexandra Oleynikova also entered the top 100 at number 96.
There are six more representatives of Ukraine in the top 500: Yulia Starodubtseva, Angelina Kalinina, Daria Snigur, Anastasia Soboleva, Veronika Podrez and Katarina Zavatskaya.
The new season starts on January 2 – the United Cup team tournament will be held in Perth and Sydney, Australia. And on the 5th, the WTA 500 tournaments will start in Brisbane and the WTA 250 tournaments in Auckland. Russia was left without the best duo of tennis players. Andreeva’s shocking decision

Our girls dared to make changes after the crumpled end of the season.
The duet of Russian tennis players Mirra Andreeva and Diana Schneider has become mega-popular throughout the tennis world over the past year and a half. During this time, the girls won prestigious titles and the love of fans, but in the new season the country will lose this powerful couple.
A successful year with a blurry ending
Mirra and Diana played together for the first time at the Olympic tournament in Paris in 2024. The girls immediately achieved significant success and brought the only medal to our country. The Russians were just a little short of winning gold. In the final they lost to Italians Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini.
After the Olympics, the girls continued to compete together in doubles. In 2025, they reached the semi-finals of Grand Slam tournaments twice. They also won WTA tournaments. Successful performances helped Schneider and Andreeva qualify for the final tournament in pairs. True, the performance in Riyadh ended in a fiasco for the girls – three defeats and elimination after the group stage.
It was obvious to the naked eye that both girls were very exhausted at the end of the year, both physically and emotionally. Because of this, Mirra even fell out of the top 8 in the world rankings at the last moment, losing the opportunity to play in the final singles tournament for the first time in her career.
New year – new partner
If we take the latest problems out of the equation, the Russians have had a successful season. All the more shocking was the news that at the Australian Open, which starts on January 18, Mirra will not play together with Schneider. This became known from a post by Australian tennis player Ellen Perez, who published applications for the Australian Open doubles tournament on her social networks.
In the new season, Andreeva continues to set ambitious goals for herself to win the title at the Grand Slam singles tournament. The tennis player admits that she wants to repeat the career successes of Rafael Nadal. Perhaps the athlete decided to focus on solo performances, which her coach Conchita Martinez has long called for.
Diana adheres to the old strategy: she will continue to perform both singles and pairs. Schneider found herself a new partner, and of a very high level. At the Australian Open, she will fight for the title along with Lyudmila Samsonova, who has repeatedly won WTA tournaments in duets. The 27-year-old Russian woman is now in 42nd place in the doubles ranking.
So far the athletes have not commented on this decision. Now it is difficult to even imagine whether one of the most successful Russian duets of recent times will ever again please with joint performances.
