Ranked 31e in the WTA, Bianca Andreescu reached the round of 16 in Miami for the third time in as many appearances at this tournament.

(Miami) Canada’s Bianca Andreescu reached the round of 16 at the Miami Open on Sunday, losing 6-4, 6-4 to Sofia Kenin of the United States.

The 22-year-old Ontarian got the job done in an hour and 34 minutes, leading 3-1 for breaks and 7-1 for aces.

Ranked 31e in the WTA, Andreescu reached the round of 16 in Miami for the third time in as many tournament appearances.

Andreescu will face off on Monday night against Ekaterina Alexandrova, 18e Headlining.

The 28-year-old Russian ruled out ninth-seeded Belinda Bencic.

Olympic gold medalist in Tokyo, Bencic was beaten 7-6 (8), 6-3.

Alexandrova saved four set points in the first set, en route to her 10e career win over a top 10 player.

Andreescu won the US Open in 2019.

She and Alexandrova never crossed swords.

On the men’s side, Denis Shapovalov of Ontario lost 6-4, 6-4 to Taylor Fritz of the United States, 10e first in the series.

Shapovalov had 12 aces, but he ran his doom by committing seven double faults.

Favorite Carlos Alcaraz faces Dusan Lujovic of Serbia.

World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka will star in the evening, opposite Czech Marie Bouzkova.

Monday afternoon, Leylah Fernandez will play doubles with Taylor Townsend, against Beatriz Hadda Maia and Giuliana Olmos.

Australian Open Sinner in the round of 16 despite cramps

(Melbourne) Double title holder Jannik Sinner had to overcome heat and cramps to overcome American Eliot Spizzirri (85) on Saturdaye) 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 and thus qualify for the round of 16 of the Australian Open.

“I had cramps first in my legs, then in my arm, then everywhere,” Sinner admitted.

“But tennis is a mental game. Even without being able to be at my best, I played as well as I could,” he added.

“If I want to go far here like the rest of the season, I have to play [bien] when it’s hot,” he insisted.

In search of a seventh Grand Slam title, the Italian will face his compatriot Luciano Darderi (25e) to try to get back to the quarter-finals in Melbourne.
