Karen Khachanov ended Tsitsipas’ run at the Miami Open, winning 2-0 sets (7-6, 6-4) and reaching the quarterfinals of the American tournament.
THE Karen Khachanov (No.16 in the world rankings) defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas (No.3 in the world rankings) with 2:0 sets (7:6, 6:4) and qualified for the “8” of the Miami Open.
It was the 26-year-old Russian tennis player’s first win against Tsitsipas because, like in the previous six matches, it was the Greek champions who celebrated in the end.
Khachanov will compete against each other with the winner of the match Francisco Cerundulo – Lorenzo Sonego for the “8” of the tournament in Miami.
The match
The match started with both tennis players holding their serves fairly loosely. It is significant that in the seventh game Stefanos threatened the Russian tennis player’s serve for the first time, but he failed to get the point in the two “available” break points.
At the other end, Khachanov was close to the break in game ten, but Tsitsipas faded at the break point to equalize 5-5. The two tennis players went into the tie-break, where Khachanov prevailed 7-4 and won the first set.
In the second set, the two tennis players easily held their serve until the fifth game. There Khachanov interrupted Tsitsipas’ serve with a love game, making the first break in the match and an important step towards winning the set (3: 2).
Tsitsipas tried to turn the game upside down but he couldn’t break Khachanov’s serve with (6-4) being the final score of the second set.
