UK may not issue visas to Russian tennis players and prevent them from participating in Wimbledon – Zhurova

State Duma Deputy of the Russian Federation, Olympic champion in speed skating Svetlana Zhurova told Match TV that the UK could create problems with obtaining visas for Russian tennis players who were allowed to participate in Wimbledon this season.

On Friday, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), which organizes Wimbledon, announced the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the competition in a neutral status and subject to certain conditions. Athletes will be prohibited from publicly expressing support for the CBO, receiving funding from states, and also having state-owned companies from Russia and Belarus as sponsors.

“Despite permission from the Wimbledon organizers, the UK may impose additional requirements for our athletes at the border, create visa barriers and refuse entry. It will certainly be a scandal, but their government can do this.

– But there is a positive trend with the admission of Russians, do you agree?

– And there was no other trend in tennis. Wimbledon did not like the £1.5 million fine and the competition without ranking points. For tennis, the decision is logical, they are all about sports. They keep the brand. In tennis, athletes have commercial support, sponsors, parents, they practically do not have athletes who are fully supported by the state. If, for example, now Poland or Ukraine tells their tennis players not to play in tournaments with the Russians, their athletes will still participate. Therefore, in tennis, no one dares to demand this from athletes, Zhurova told Match TV.

The Russians and Belarusians were suspended from the Wimbledon tournament in 2022 due to the events in Ukraine. For this, the organizers of the competition were fined one million dollars, and the WTA and ATP stripped the tournament of rating points.

Wimbledon 2023 will take place from 3 to 16 July.
