Wimbledon had no choice but to allow the Russians, despite the pressure of his government, according to former world number one Yevgeny Kafelnikov.
On Friday, the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), which is the organizer of Wimbledon, announced the admission of Russians and Belarusians to the competition in a neutral status and subject to certain conditions.
– WTA and ATP are strong organizations that defend the rights of players. Last year, Wimbledon was stripped of ranking points, the tournament organizers were warned that next year there could be even worse sanctions if the Russians were not allowed. Wimbledon had nothing to do, despite the pressure of his government, Kafelnikov told Gazeta.Ru.
Wimbledon 2023 will take place from 3 to 16 July.
