Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports Dmitry Svishchev believes that the organizers of Wimbledon should allow Russians to participate in the tournament without any conditions.
Russian and Belarusian tennis players will be able to play at Wimbledon in 2023 if they sign a declaration of neutrality. They will also be prohibited from expressing any support for Russia or their government and from receiving funding from Russia.
– The organizers of Wimbledon took an amazing position. They seem to allow Russian and Belarusian tennis players, but they still restrict them. It is not clear how they will evaluate the support of the NWO. Will they watch social networks from athletes? Or will they be forced to sign some form indicating their attitude to this issue? I am categorically against such questionnaires and drawing our tennis players into dirty political games.
There are questions about the terms of financing. In our country, many athletes have either received or are receiving state support. Why do they even have to report to the Wimbledon organizers about where they get their funding from? We do not ask how British, American and other athletes are financed. It’s none of our business. And all the more not deal organizers Wimbledon. It is necessary either to allow our tennis players without any conditions, or not to allow them and again lose the right to accrue rating points and receive a fine,” Svishchev told Vprognoze.ru.
Russian and Belarusian tennis players were suspended from the Wimbledon tournament in 2022 due to the events in Ukraine. For this, the organizers of the competition were fined one million dollars, and the WTA and ATP stripped the tournament of rating points.
Wimbledon 2023 will take place from 3 to 16 July.
