Miami Open: Medvedev dominates, defeats Shiner in finals
Daniil Medvedev won 2-0 sets against Yannick Siner and won the Miami Open, earning his 19th career title.
Daniil Medvedev had his best showing at the Miami Open in the finals when he defeated Yannick Shiner 7-5, 6-3 won the 5th career ATP Masters 1000 but also the 19th Tour title.
With that win, the former world No. 1 reached 24 in 25 games, won his 4th title this year in 5 finals in 2023, 5th Masters 1000 of his career, 19th Tour title while also scoring a 6th :0-Success the confrontations with Shiner.
Medvedev finished the final in Florida with 86% of his first serve points, conceding just 5 points against Sinner (32/37), hitting 19 winners, committing 21 unforced errors (vs. the Italian’s 36) and taking advantage of 4 of those 6 break chances.
The Russian was the first to threaten service from Shiner, who hit the first big serve and erased a break point in the second game of the final (1-1). But what Medvedev couldn’t do at that point, Shiner did a little later with a break and 3:2.
The Russian reacted immediately as he equalized with a breakback to make it 3-3. From there, the two finalists held until the 11th game, with Medvedev leading (6-5), and then he grabbed the deciding break of the 1st set, which he finished 7-5.
The second leg of the final started with problems from both players from serve position. Medvedev found the first break (2-0), the Italian responded immediately (2-1), but again the Russian managed to ‘hurt’ Shiner’s serve, making it 3-1 and then 4-1.
Somewhere there the title tipped towards Medvedev, who from then on held serve and achieved victory, winning the Miami Open for the first time in his career.
As of Monday (3/4), Medvedev will move up one spot by climbing to No. 4 in the world, while Shiner will move up two spots by climbing to No. 9 in the world.
