(Charleston) Leylah Annie Fernandez worked hard, but that didn’t stop her from going down 7-5, 7-6 (6) to Paula Badosa in the second round of the Charleston tennis tournament on Wednesday after -noon.

Fernandez, the 51e world player, bowed out after an hour and 51 minutes of play in front of the 12e first in the series. Badosa now has a perfect 3-0 career record against the Quebecer.

The 20-year-old Lavalloise was messy for a good part of the match against the Spaniard. In particular, she committed an impressive total of seven double faults, against only one for Badosa. In addition, the latter was more effective than her with her first and second serve.

Badosa will now face Russian Diana Shnaider, 95, in the round of 16.e in the world.

As for Fernandez, she will be back on the court later today with American Taylor Townsend to begin her doubles tournament against Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa and Alicja Rosolska.

On the other hand, Ontario’s Katherine Sebov will try to get her ticket to the round of 16 singles in the evening against Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, the fourth seed of the tournament.
