Sakkari: “I played very well, I try to be focused”
Maria Sakkari avoided big words about the course of this season after the impressive performance and the victory over Petra Kvitova in Indian Wells.
Against Petra Kvitova, Maria Sakkari (No. 6 in the world) was… at her best. Something that turned out to be a win – qualifying for the 4th round of the Indian Wells, but much more than the way it came (without losing a game in the second set).
The 26-year-old champion equalized against world number 31 but was not arrogant in her comments after the final. Instead, keep it low key, as is always the case.
“I played very well today, it’s never easy against Petra Kvitova. She is my friend, I have a lot of respect for her, I have a lot of respect for what she has achieved. Many would envy her career. It wasn’t a very good day for her but I hope she’s back to the level she wants“The 26-year-old initially added:
“I don’t think about what’s going to happen next because it can put me under pressure. Last year was a great season, I finished in the top 10, I’m proud of that. I try to play my game every day and focus on what I’m doing. I want to be focused and luckily it’s going well“.
Finally, he remarked: “I love every time I’m here (ss: in Indian Wells), it’s one of the best tournaments I’ve ever played. I don’t know anyone who hasn’t loved it over the years. It’s a wonderful place, a very different and beautiful atmosphere. I look forward to seeing the world again at the next race“.
