Tsitsipas: Stefanos’ draw at the Barcelona Open

Stefanos Tsitsipas met his potential path at the Barcelona tournament where he reached the quarter-finals last year.

Stefanos Tsitsipas, after his disqualification in the quarterfinals of Monte Carlo, turns his attention to the 500 tournament in Barcelona (17-23/4), where the draw took place on M. Saturday, with the Greek tennis player competing in singles and doubles.

The two-time finalist of the tournament (2018, 2021) was placed 2nd on the table, meaning he will avoid (until the final) defending champion Carlos Alcarath, but also Casper Rude, who is 3rd.

Instead, he finds himself in the same half as Monte Carlo semi-finalist Yannick Sinner, whom he will find in the semi-finals of the event if the logical ranking-based scenarios are confirmed. Tsitsipas gets a bye from the 1st round, immediately after that he plays either against Pedro Katsin or against Heis Brauer.

In the event that Tsitsipas overcomes the first hurdle in the 3rd round, Denis Shapovalov is logically waiting for him, while in the quarterfinals the candidates are Grigor Dimitrov and Alex de Minor.

He is likely to meet Siner in the semi-finals if the Italian manages to make it to the tournament in Spain after Monte Carlo.

At the top of the table, Carlos Alcarath, returning from his hand injury that kept him away from Monte Carlo, will face either Ilia Ivasca or Nuno Borges in the 2nd round, while in the quarterfinals he will most likely face Franz Tiafoe.

In doubles, Stefanos Tsitsipas will pair up with experienced doubles player Nicolas Mahut for the first time, with the two players meeting Matve Midelkup and Andreas Mies in the 1st round, while in the event of a qualifier they will play with the No. 1 on the board and a big favorite for the title, Wesley Kuhlhoff and Neil Skapsky.

Quarterfinals possible

  • Carlos Alcarath (Spain) – Frances Tiafoe (USA)
  • Kasper Ruud (Norway) – Karen Khachanov (Russia)
  • Yannick Sinner (Italy) – Cameron Norrie (UK)
  • Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece) – Alex de Minor (Australia)
