You can sit! Rublev pulled out a dead match and cried

Andrey finally won the title of the Masters series tournament. And he did it in a real thriller.

Russian tennis player Andrei Rublev won the Masters for the first time in his career. In the final of the clay tournament in Monte Carlo, he beat Dane Holger Rune with a score of 5:7, 6:2, 7:5.

And he did it in a crazy ending!

Tough week

Having received the fifth seed, Andrey started immediately from the second round. In the first match, he beat Spaniard Jaume Munar in three sets. Then the Russian Karen Khachanov imposed a fight on him. And let Rublev win in two sets, but he spent enough energy.

The quarter-final meeting with Jan-Lennard Struff was also not without difficulty for Andrey. The German had every chance to transfer the game to the third set, and who knows how it would have turned out in the end, but the Russian tennis player still got his way – 6:1, 7:6 (7:5). The semi-final turned out to be three sets: in it, Rublev, losing, pulled out a victory from Taylor Fritz from the USA – 5:7, 6:1, 6:3.

Three matches out of four

Holger Rune, already known as the “king of outrageousness and scandals”, was seeded in Monte Carlo under the sixth number. On the way to the decisive meeting, he beat the Austrian Dominik Thiem, the Russian Daniil Medvedev and the representative of Italy Yannick Sinner. In the 1/8 finals, the 19-year-old Dane was supposed to play with another Italian Matteo Berrettini, but he withdrew due to a tear in the oblique abdominal muscles.

At the same time, only one match for Rune turned out to be a three-set match: Sinner imposed the maximum fight on him in the semifinals. The rest of the meetings, including with Medvedev, the Dane played very confidently and finished in two sets.

Before the final, Holger looked better. Rublev was required to show his best tennis.

Feat in the third set

The tense game for the title began from the very first games. With the score 3:2, Rune made a break, but Rublev immediately took the opponent’s serve, and then equalized the score – 4:4. The swing lasted until the end of the game. Andrei had the opportunity to transfer the game to a tie-break, but a mistake on the pitch cost him the set – 5:7.

The second set also began with the exchange of breaks. But with the score 2:2, Rublev seemed to turn on additional speed and demolished Rune. The Russian’s serve was flying, and the attacks were as effective as possible, and in defense he worked to the end. There were no questions about the transfer of the game to the third set – 6:2.

The decisive segment of the match turned out to be a failure for Rublev. Tired, he could no longer cope with Rune’s pressure, resulting in a 1:4 lag and 0:30 in the sixth game.

And then Andrew joined. Having pulled out a seemingly “hanging” game from the score of 30:40, he gathered himself and began to rapidly catch up with Rune. The Dane, who had nothing left before the victory, got nervous, swam and began to make mistakes more often. So 1:4 turned into 4:4, and then into 5:5. In the 11th game, Rublev made a break, and then, without any apparent problems, took the set and won the tournament – 7:5.

Sports feat, not otherwise!

“I Have Tears”

After the victory, Rublev did not hide his emotions. Still – the first victorious “Masters” in his career!

– I have tears. Do not know what to say. I’m just happy to finally, after so much effort, win this damn title on the thousandth, – said Andrey.

Rune, in turn, was visibly upset by the outcome.

– I definitely controlled the third set, but failed to bring it to victory. It’s a shame, but it’s part of tennis, admitted the Dane.

Ahead – Bosnia and Herzegovina

The title in Monte Carlo was Rublev’s 13th in his career. And the victory at the Masters is the first: previously, the Russian lost twice in the finals. In 2021, Alexander Zverev stopped him in Cincinnati, and in 2022, Stefanos Tsitsipas in Monte Carlo.

In the status of a champion, Andrey will go to Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the ATP-250 series tournament will be held. Now the main thing is to prepare well for Roland Garros, which starts at the end of May. There is still plenty of time, and such major victories will help Rublev gain the confidence with which great things can be done.

Medvedev’s former coach responded to Oleinikova’s words by supporting Ukraine

45-year-old French coach Gilles CervaraThe Russian tennis player, who worked with Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev from 2017 to 2025, published a post reacting to the interview on his Instagram account. Alexandra Oleynikova For L’Equipe:

“Alexandra, I cannot and do not want to remain indifferent to your life or the lives of many people in the same or similar situation (and not only because of the war…).

This could happen to everyone on this planet sooner or later. “My respect and admiration for the courage of your resistance,” Gilles wrote.

In an interview with L’Equipe, Oleynikova described Arina Sabalenko, Diana Schneider and Daniil Medvedev as dangerous players in the Tour for supporting dictators Vladimir Putin and Alexander Lukoshenko. Australian Open A Sabalenka-Mboko duel between experience and youth

(Melbourne) Luxury brands took center stage at the Australian Open, where Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka and Canadian Victoria Mboko advanced to the fourth round.

But when the world number one women’s tennis player takes on one of the sport’s rising young stars, it will only be about tennis.

Top seed Sabalenka beat Anastasia Potapova 7-6 (4), 7-6 (7) and Mboko, 19, eliminated Clara Tauson, 14e seeded, 7-6 (5), 5-7, 6-3 to earn their bye to the round of 16.

Sabalenka has won the Australian Open twice and reached the final at Melbourne Park last year. She also has two US Open titles. Mboko is making his debut at the Australian Open this year.

Fashion was more than ever the center of attention during this tournament after Naomi Osaka’s spectacular entrance during her first round match.

Sabalenka and Mboko therefore had to answer questions about their advertising contracts, which coincide with the first Grand Slam meeting of the year: the Belarusian with Gucci and the Canadian with Rolex.

But on Friday, the focus was mainly on the upcoming match between two players with very different experiences.

“First of all, I never spoke to her, I never had the opportunity to play or train with her. I only saw her outside,” Sabalenka said of Mboko.

I watched a few matches. Yes, she is an excellent player. She’s a fighter. She plays very well, with combative tennis.

Aryna Sabalenka on Victoria Mboko

Sabalenka is playing at the Australian Open for the eighth time, has won 22 titles on the tour and earned more than $45 million in purses during her career.

She was long considered one of the sport’s most promising players, but she had to overcome stage fright and service problems. It was only in her fourth appearance at the Australian Open that she qualified for the second week of the tournament.

“I think for me it would have been very difficult to deal with success at such a young age,” Sabalenka said.

“But when I see these girls, so young and who have already accomplished so much, who play tennis so well and who are so mature, I find it incredible. I feel like they mature a lot faster than me. »

Mboko acknowledged that this will be a big step forward, on and off the court. She is only making her fourth appearance at a Grand Slam tournament, and her first participation in the round of 16 at this stage of one of the four biggest events in world tennis.

She won two WTA titles, the first last August in Montreal – in the WTA 1000 category – when she was 18 years old and benefited from a pass from the organizers of the National Bank Open.

“I think it’s super cool. I have never played against the current world number 1. It will be a very different experience,” admitted the Canadian.

“I guess we will also play on the Rod Laver court. I’ve never played on center court at a Grand Slam either. Lots of first times. I think it’s really cool to be able to do this on Sunday. Just to show what I’m capable of. »

Sabalenka has built a large following by being very active on social media, attracting new fans to tennis and giving her existing supporters a behind-the-scenes look.

Sabalenka takes her role as an ambassador to the public and a positive influence for young players very seriously. Mboko is about to have his first up-close experience.

“That’s my only priority: to be a good example, to show that it’s possible to find a balance, that you have to know how to have fun while remaining focused on your career,” she explains.

“I want to prevent young people from making the same mistake as me, namely devoting themselves exclusively to tennis, which generates a lot of pressure and ends up destroying you from the inside. »
