Tennis: The Grand Slam will be held this year with a super tiebreak
After a meeting of all parties involved, it was decided that the Grand Slams this year would be played with a 10-point super tiebreak in the deciding set.
After consultations of the WTA, ATP, ITF and the boards of the four Grand Slams, it was decided to apply the super tie-break rule of 10 points in the deciding set if the score is 6-6 as of Roland Garros of 2022.
“The decision is based on a strong desire to make the rules of Grand Slam matches more consistent while improving the experience for players and fans alike.
This test, approved under the rules of the tennis committee administered by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), applies to all Grand Slams in all categories and in all competitions, qualifiers, singles and doubles, singles and doubles doubles, wheelchair, junior and will 2022 at the Roland Garros tournament,” read the joint statement.
This test means that if the score is 6-6 in the last set, the winner of the game is whoever gets the first 10 points as long as they have a two-point difference over their opponent.
This is undoubtedly a historic decision and a concerted effort by the four majors, who acted by their own rules in the deciding sets.
The first Grand Slam to attempt the 10-point super tiebreak measure was the Australian Open in 2019.
At Wimbledon in 2019, the tie-break was applied to the deciding set when the score was 12-12, while the US Open from 1970 established the classic tie-break (7 points) and final set when the score was 6-6.
This historic rule change will be reviewed after a testing period and completion of all Grand Slams before a permanent change is requested.
