Australian Nick Kyrgios is the first qualifier for the quarterfinals of the men’s draw at the Masters 1000 in Indian Wells, taking advantage of the package of the Italian Jannick Sinner with whom he had to face on Wednesday.
The 26-year-old could face in the next round his favorite tournament Rafael Nadal (4th in the world). The Spaniard, undefeated in 2022, will first need to win the 18th consecutive victory in the afternoon, against the American Riley Opelka (17th).
Falling to 132nd place in the world, Kyrgios had not reached the quarterfinals of a Masters 1000 from Cincinnati in 2017, where he had reached the final. Earlier that year, he had also reached this stage of the competition at Indian Wells.
Kyrgios is just playing his second tournament of the season in the California desert, after the Australian Open where he was knocked out in the second round by the Russian Daniil Medvedev, future finalist of the tournament.
The tournament organizers did not give details about the reason for Sinner’s departure.
