Disqualification from Barcelona Open doubles for Tsitsipas
Stefanos Tsitsipas is stuck in doubles at the Barcelona Open after being beaten 2-1 by Wesley Kuhlhoff and Niall Skapski along with Nikola Mahut.
A few hours after qualifying for the Barcelona Open singles semifinals, Tsitsipas was eliminated from the doubles game in which he faced Nicolas Mahut.
The two tennis players battled No. 1 boarders, Wesley Kuhlhoff and Neil Skapski, but were aware of the loss in the super tiebreak 6-4, 3-6, 10-7 to stay out of the Barcelona Open doubles.
Tsitsipas, who had qualified for the singles semi-finals just hours earlier, teamed up with his French partner to give it their all against two experienced doubles players while they nearly pulled off an epic upset in the super tie-break.
The 1st set went to Kuhlhof/Skapski, who found a break in the 3rd game (2:1), which they then had to wipe out 4 break points to take advantage of the 3:1. They then made three straight loves to win the set and take a 1-0 lead.
In the dramatic set 2, Kuhlhof and Skapski did what they did in set 1 and threatened a break in game 3, but Tsitsipas and Mahut managed to hold on, erasing two break points and taking the lead at 2-1 kept.
In the next game, it was Kuhlhof and Skapski’s turn to pull off a big hold and save 4 break points (2-2), but what they failed to do at that point, the Greek-French duo did in game 8 when they did Break scored (5-3) closing the set immediately afterwards, tie at 1-1.
In the super tie-break, Kuhlhoff and Skapski led 6-3, but Tsitsipas and Mahut responded immediately, dividing the match 6-6. The decisive mini-break came from Kuhlhoff and Skapski, who took the lead 8-6 and 9-7, finished the game 10-7 and advanced to the semifinals, where they will meet Bopana and Embde on Saturday.
