Félix Auger-Aliassime had to skip the start of the season on clay due to knee pain.

Félix Auger-Aliassime admits it from the outset: his start to the season is “a little below” his expectations. However, the principal concerned remains optimistic for the rest of the year. After all, two factors work in his favor: time and talent.

The Quebecer had to skip the start of the season on clay due to knee pain. After his early second-round elimination at the Miami tournament, the 22-year-old took time out of action to rest.

Like Roger Federer, it is extremely rare for Auger-Aliassime to withdraw from a tournament in which he was registered. The last time was at Roland-Garros in 2019. However, he will return to clay this week, at the Madrid tournament, in preparation for the French Open. In the meantime, this one-month break will have been beneficial.

From his home in Monaco, Auger-Aliassimne, ninth racket in the world, is lucid and honest about his start to the season. His results are below expectations, or at least the standards established at the end of last season.

“I think it’s completely normal, he admits, shortly after having finished supper. These are cycles that are part of a career. There, I’m fine. It did me good to rest a little. »

In reality, his start to the campaign is far from terrible. He has won 12 of his 19 games. It is rather the illusion that he must win every tournament, like last fall, which distorts the perception and expectations of him.

Auger-Aliassime prefers to see the glass half full: “I won against the players I have to beat on paper and then I lost against very good players, twice against [Daniil] Medvedev in particular. Despite having issues with my knee, I remained competitive in tournaments. »

He nevertheless regrets having been unable to ride the victorious wave at the end of the last season, during which he walked on water.

After the United States International, the big guy chained the tournaments: the Laver Cup, Astana, Florence, Antwerp, Basel, Paris-Bercy, the ATP finals and the Davis Cup. He ended up triumphing at five of those tournaments. He then took a few days off before flying to Australia and restarting the machine.

Nevertheless, this huge volume caught up with him physically, emotionally and mentally over the winter. Does he regret playing so much tennis? “I had the reflection with my team. Finally, “I have no regrets about what I decided to do.”

Félix Auger-Aliassime believes his huge volume of games at the end of last season caught up with him over the winter.

At the end of the United States Open, he took the time to think about what to do next. “I decided to do everything and I won almost every tournament. It was a good challenge that I managed to take up and I am proud of it. It was a first for me to play so many matches and win so much in such a short time. »

It’s as if he no longer knew how to lose: “I was calm, I had my bearings on the field, I knew how to win matches. I really had this confidence that I had everything to win. »

It would therefore have been cruel, and even a little curious, to curb this surge. Auger-Aliassime acknowledges, however, having “a little underestimated the emotional, physical and mental load that it required”.

The knee and clay

“It’s not perfect yet, but it’s going in the right direction,” says the new Dior brand ambassador about his knee.

Auger-Aliassime has been injury-free since the start of his career. He takes jealous care of his body and this has allowed him to avoid health problems. The last three years have been “great” in this regard and this imposed break has made him realize many things.

“Getting up every day and having pain somewhere, it opened my eyes. Like when you have a cold and you have trouble breathing, you remember times when you were breathing easily and you didn’t think about it, because it was taken for granted. »

Félix Auger-Aliassime will return to clay this week, at the Madrid tournament, in preparation for Roland-Garros.

In this sense, the last weeks of training have been an interesting challenge. The idea is to find the balance between doing enough to stay in shape, but not doing too much to avoid aggravating your condition.

“I haven’t found perfection yet, because it’s a constant adjustment. Sometimes you have to push out of your comfort zone, because that’s where you’re going to look for progress. But at the same time, there are days when there is weariness, when you are more tired and when the training may be a little less quality. It’s not an exact science. »

He will take the collar again in Madrid, on clay. A difficult surface for the joints, but on which he likes to express himself. As his first game approaches, he is somewhere between fear and excitement.

“Compared to what I have, what hurts me the most are the bends. The slides were a little complicated at first, but now it’s much better. I feel ready to go and play in Madrid. […] But no one around me knows how long it will take before I get back to 100%, ”says the Quebecer.

Breastfeeding comrade

Furthermore, tempers flared at the Monte-Carlo tournament between several players from the top 10 global. Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev struggled in front of the media and Taylor Fritz aimed some arrows at Stefanos Tsitsipas. “It was funny watching it go from my house,” admits Auger-Aliassime.

These situations had become rare under the Federer-Nadal era, but they were commonplace in the 1980s and 1990s. “, he explains.

“It’s true that through their interventions, we feel that between Medvedev, Tsitsipas and Zverev, there is a bit of a triangle and they don’t seem to like each other too much, but hey, that’s part of the game. one side, it’s not so bad. »

The right-hander is more diplomatic, calm and composed. It would therefore be surprising to see him involved in such childishness. It is nevertheless essential for him to remember the reason for which he is there, to play on the most prestigious grounds in the world.

“The reality is that we’re not here to make friends. Friends, I have some in Montreal who will remain my friends, no matter what happens. We’re here to advance our careers, we all want the same thing every week and only one is going to get it. However, I think we have to set a good example. For me it is very important. »

Welcome to Dior!

The French company Dior announced on Saturday, the day after Félix Auger-Aliassime’s interview with The Press, having made the Quebecer its new ambassador. The fashion giant made the announcement on Twitter. According to the company, the player embodies “the spirit and the timeless signature of men’s creations”. He therefore joins Emma Raducanu, winner of the United States Open in 2021, as the face of the brand. Auger-Aliassime was also already sponsored by Adidas, Babolat, TAG Heuer and Renault, since January.

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina In a flash interview on the court, she commented on her victory over Diana Schneider in the 1/16 final match of the Australian Open 2026:

– Elina, congratulations. When you turned the match score you had the biggest smile on your face. It was a tough match, wasn’t it? Relaxation?

– Yes definitely. It was a difficult match. I was really hoping to continue the service. We took a few breaks and I was a little disappointed in myself. But at the end of the day, I’m very, very happy with my performance. And of course it’s really great to play in front of you and win. Thank you.

– You went from point to point in the first set. You played great in the tiebreaker match. In the second game you won 3:1 and had the game ball. You didn’t apply it. How disappointed are you? Because I saw you taking very deep breaths.

“This is how you deal with disappointments.” Of course, when you miss a few opportunities, it feels like the world is ending. Of course you want to get back into the game and fight. I was very happy and tried to take out this frustration with my fists and hit even harder.

– You did a great job. And your husband is he still here? Yes he’s still here [смотрит на Гаэля Монфиса]. He doesn’t like us talking about him but I have to ask you. unfortunately he lost in the first round What’s the best tennis advice he’s ever given you? Or you may have problems (laughs).

– I’m thinking of being calmer (laughs). It taught me to be calmer. We play a lot of matches. We started playing tennis when we were very young. I started playing tennis at the age of four. He started playing tennis at the age of three. We spend our whole lives on the field and I think it’s important to find things you enjoy off the field as well. We have a wonderful family with our daughter Skye. This is such a wonderful gift for us. It’s a special moment for us to spend Gael’s final year together and enjoy it as much as possible.

– You definitely become more comfortable during the match (Elina laughs). After the previous game, you were asked what you were going to do for the rest of the day. You said you were going to take Gael’s credit card and go shopping. What did you buy?

– I bought a few bags. Thank you very much [обращается к Гаэлю]. I really liked it. You are a very good husband. Now I think he’s going to ask me to get my credit card to pay for his purchases.

– Don’t do this. Don’t give it to him, Elina. Congratulations on your victory and your two bags. Cheers to Elina Svitolina!

Australian Open Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev win and advance to the round of 16

(Melbourne) Favorite Carlos Alcaraz admitted to having lost the drop shot battle against Frenchman Corentin Moutet, despite his victory in the third round at the Australian Open tennis tournament.

Moutet varied his shots against Alcaraz on Friday at the Rod Laver Arena. His mix of drop shots, spin balls, between-the-legs shots, half-volleys, angled volleys and even a spoon serve kept the world number one on his toes.

However, Alcaraz only needed a little over two hours to eliminate his opponent, thanks to a victory in three sets of 6-2, 6-4, 6-1. The clash, however, did not prove to be a walk in the park despite the final score.

“When you face a player like Corentin, you never know what to expect,” explained Alcaraz during his on-field television interview. I really had fun on the pitch. As you could see, we both hit some great shots. Great points. »

There were tense moments, like in the second set, in which Alcaraz let a 3-0 lead slip away to trail 4-3.

As spectacular as ever, the 22-year-old Spaniard responded with some spectacular shots, which helped him keep his composure.

In the first round, Moutet (no. 32) was booed by the public for his spoon serve during a match point. This time, the Australian public gave him a much warmer welcome.

After winning a point late in the match with a perfect, deep lob in the corner, he celebrated his victory by raising his fist. When he held on during this game with a winning volley, he greeted the crowd by removing his cap.

Alcaraz will now face American Tommy Paul (No. 19), who advanced to the next round when Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (No. 14) retired while losing 6-1, 6-1.

“We had some really good battles against each other,” Alcaraz admitted. The matches are always played at a very high level. »

Earlier Friday, Daniil Medvedev (No. 11) erased a two-set deficit to defeat Hungarian Fabian Marozsan 6-7 (5), 4-6, 7-5, 6-0, 6-3.

“After the first round, I was very angry with myself because I hadn’t done better. It cost me dearly in the second, analyzed Medvedev, winner of the 2021 US Open and three-time finalist at Melbourne Park. In the third run I had to let go and focus on what I needed to do. »

American Learner Tien (No. 25) beat Nuno Borges 7-6 (9), 6-4, 6-2 to secure a meeting against Medvedev.

Zverev and De Minaur reach the eighth

World No.3 Alexander Zverev won a third match in four sets in a row to reach the round of 16, which will also be played by Australian Alex De Minaur (6e).

In the last match of the day in the John Cain Arena, the outgoing finalist won 7-5, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 against Cameron Norrie (27e), his seventh victory in as many duels against the Briton on the main circuit.

Triple finalist in Grand Slam, Zverev will face Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo (21) on Sundaye) for a place in the quarter-finals.

A few minutes before the German’s victory, Alex De Minaur won 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 against the American Frances Tiafoe (34e).

The last Australian competing in the men’s draw has thus been invited for the fifth year in a row to the round of 16 of the Australian Open and will face on Sunday the Kazakhstani Alexander Bublik (10e), or to the Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry (62e).

Double title holder Jannik Sinner (4e) and the ten-time winner in Melbourne Novak Djokovic (4e) will play their third round on Saturday, respectively against the American Eliot Spizzirri (85e) and the Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp (75e).
