In the XXI century, Spain became a tennis powerhouse. Different number 1s in the world, titles every season and more than a dozen players in the best 100 year after year. But that’s not all: it’s also the venue for one of the most important tournaments on the men’s and women’s circuit, the Open Madrid.
Below is the list of champions since the tournament arrived in the Spanish capital in 2002.
Who has won the Madrid Open more times?
How could it be otherwise, the most champion is a local: Rafael Nadal. The left-hander, the greatest reference in history, celebrated in Madrid five times to lead the general classification. His first title came in 2005, when the tournament was still played on indoor concrete: Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic was his victim. This match is well remembered because Rafa recovered from an incredible fightback to eventually win 3-6, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 and 7-6 (3).
Already on clay he collected the trophies of 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2017. In these definitions he prevailed over Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka, Kei Nishikori and Dominic Thiem. Federer, who beat him in 2009, and Novak Djokovic are his pursuers with three wins.
In women, the first winner is the Czech Republic Petra Kvitova, who won the 2011, 2015 and 2018 editions. With two are Serena Williams (2012 and 2013) and Simona Halep (2016 and 2017). It is worth mentioning that Madrid arrived on the WTA calendar only in 2009.
