Sakkari: Against Bandosa in the Indian Wells semifinals
Last year’s Indian Wells champion Paula Bandosa meets Maria Sakkari in the semifinals en route to the final of the tournament.
Last year’s Indian Wells champion Paula Bandosa makes her way to Maria Sakkari in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open.
After the Greek’s set win over Rimbakina, Bandosa followed her path and ‘sealed’ the big derby of the semifinals in California with her 4th consecutive win without dropping a set in this year’s tournament.
The Spaniard prevailed against Veronica Kundermetova (No. 24). 6-3, 6-2 after 79 minutes of play he is in the semi-finals of the 1000 tournament in the desert for the second time in a row.
The 24-year-old had a great match, winning 40/55 points behind serve, not even accepting a break from Kundermetova and claiming her 13th win for the season.
Bandosa won 15/21 (!) points behind the 2nd serve of his Russian opponent and finished the last quarterfinals of the women’s board with 3/8 breakballs.
The battle between the Spaniard and Sakkari, apart from which of the two tennis players will make it to the Indian Wells grand final, will decide which of the two will move into the top five in the world rankings next week.
In the event of a Bandosa win, the 24-year-old will rise to at least No. 4 in the world, while the 26-year-old Greek will climb to at least World No. 3 in the event of a win. If Maria loses, she stays in 6th place next week.
