The electronic system will replace linesmen at ATP tournaments from 2025
The electronic system Electronic Line Calling Live (ELC Live) will be introduced at all tournaments of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) from 2025, according to the ATP website.
The system will replace line judges. The ATP has conducted a study among stakeholders, including fans, citing accuracy and consistency as the most important factors in evaluating various out-of-bounds systems.
ELC Live was first tested at the 2017 ATP Youth Finals in Milan. In recent years, the system has been able to be used on a voluntary basis and has become widespread since the start of the COVID‑19 pandemic.
“This is a landmark moment for our sport, and we did not achieve it without careful consideration. Tradition is at the heart of tennis and line judges have played an important role over the years. However, we are responsible for introducing innovations and new technologies. Our sport deserves the highest quality refereeing, and we are pleased that we will be able to provide this throughout our tour from 2025, – said the head of the ATP Andrea Gaudenzi.
Several vendors are currently approved to provide the technology on hard and grass courts, with final testing being conducted on clay.
