(Rome) Daniil Medvedev’s clay game just keeps getting better.

He first reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in 2021, before playing the fourth round of the French internationals last year. Now the third-ranked Russian has taken another step forward at the Italian Open.

Medvedev beat German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann 6-2, 6-2 to reach the Rome Masters semi-finals, having lost in his first match in his previous three appearances at Foro Italico.

Under a cloudy sky, Medvedev controlled play from the baseline and on serve to put an end to the fine run of Hanfmann, who fell Andrey Rublev in the previous round.

In four games, Medvedev has so far conceded only one set to his opponents.

He will play his next match against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Fifth seed, the Greek won 6-3 and 6-4 ahead of Borna Coric, thanks in particular to three breaks.

Tsitsipas was extremely effective at net, scoring eight out of nine times.

Medvedev has long been a hard-court threat, winning at Flushing Meadows in 2021 and reaching three other finals at the United States and Australia internationals. He had been excluded from the first round at Roland-Garros from 2017 to 2020, before experiencing more success.

Australian Open Denis Shapovalov loses in second round

(Melbourne) Denis Shapovalov lost sharply 6-4, 6-3 and 6-2 to Marin Cilic in the second round of the Australian Open tennis tournament on Thursday.
