Daniil brilliantly dealt with Holger Rune and won the title on clay for the first time in his career.

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev was the first racket of the world and won the Grand Slam tournament, but he had not been able to take trophies on clay before. In Rome, the ex-first racket of the world finally won a historic victory, after which he confessed his love to what he had literally hated before.

Medvedev met his incredible success by kneeling down.

Moving towards the final

At the Italian Open in men’s singles, Rafael Nadal often shone, but this time the “King of the Clay” decided to skip the tournament. This increased the chances of other contenders winning the trophy, including last year’s Masters winner Serbian Novak Djokovic, Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and Medvedev, who received the third seed.

And yet, for Medvedev, who had not previously taken trophies on clay, this coverage was always not very convenient, and therefore, for the time being, his ability to get to victory was questioned by many. But other potential favorites gradually fell out of the race, and our tennis player stubbornly continued to move towards the final, showing an impressive game in almost every match.

Karen Khachanov was knocked out in the second round, Alcaraz stumbled in the third round, Andrey Rublev, Alexander Zverev and Yanik Sinner ended their journey in the fourth. But Medvedev was still in business. The quarter-final was the final stop for Novak Djokovic, the semi-final for Kasper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas. And our tennis player, having dealt with the Greek, found himself in the final, where the Dane Holger Rune was waiting for him.

“I didn’t think I’d win”

The bookmakers chose Rune as the favorite, even though he had only the seventh seed. Daniil lost only one set before the final, knocked out strong competitors Zverev and Tsitsipas. However, the Dane was also good – after all, it was he who managed to stop Djokovic, and in a dispute with Ruud, he showed the will to win. In addition, one should not discount the fact that this season the Russian has already lost to this opponent.

On the eve of the decisive match, Medvedev himself paid tribute to Holger, noting that the Dane was one of the strongest on clay, but still promised to show his best tennis. The meeting started later than the appointed time, the reason for that is the rain that tired the local fans. But the elements did not particularly affect the mood of the participants, both tried not to give each other an advantage. At the very beginning, perhaps, Rune acted a little more successfully, but in the end of the set, Danya changed and took the victory 7:5.

The beginning of the second game of the Russian again did not work out – he failed his pitch. Quite quickly equalizing the score, Daniil again began to collect all sorts of mistakes. The third set was becoming a very real prospect, but Medvedev felt that it was not worth delaying. The Russian again took the ending, took the game with exactly the same score of 7:5 and finished his way to the trophy on his knees! Yes, that’s how our tennis player decided to celebrate his triumph, touching for a moment with the previously unloved surface. After the athlete wrote the word “ground” on the camera and drew a heart next to it.

“I always want to believe in myself and I always want to win the biggest tournaments in the world. At the same time, I didn’t think I would win a clay tournament in my career because I usually hated them. I didn’t feel good playing on clay. Now I feel amazing. It was a tough match, we were both nervous. I am glad that I was able to add at the end of the first set, ”the ATP website quotes Medvedev as saying.

Well, now there is a victory in the clay tournament, and at the same time Daniil managed to win the sixth Masters and take the 20th trophy in his career. In addition, Medvedev will become the second racket of the world and can reasonably consider himself one of the main contenders for victory at Roland Garros.
