Nadal no longer plays in Monte Carlo after 18 years
Rafael Nadal’s injury costs him (and) his participation in Monte Carlo, with the Spanish tennis player losing that tournament after 18 years.
For the first time since 2004, Rafa Nadal will not play at the Monte Carlo Masters (April 10-17). The 35-year-old Spaniard, who has been struggling with injury for a few days, announced that he will be out for 4-6 weeks, meaning he will not feature at the inaugural Earth Masters of 2022.
18 years after his last… absence from the Principality, Rafa will be watching the tournament, which he has won 11 times in the past, on TV while recovering from the injury he picked up at Indian Wells.
In his 16 consecutive appearances in the tournament, Nadal’s streak of not missing an edition of the Monte Carlo Masters from 2005 to last year will end. The exception is of course 2020 when the tournament was not played due to the Covid-19 outbreak.
In 2004, a year after his debut in Monte Carlo, the then 18-year-old Rafa was sidelined with an injury. 18 years later he will do the same. He doesn’t have too many points to defend though, having lost to eventual finalist Andrei Rublev in last year’s quarter-finals.
Of course, Rafa will also miss the following Barcelona Open (ATP 500) (April 18-24). There he will not be able to defend his title win against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.
The holder of 12 trophies in Barcelona will miss the event for the first time since 2010. In total, he has made 16 appearances from 2011 to 2021, 10 of them in a row.

As for Ukrainian women, the country’s best tennis player in 2025 is 14th-ranked Elina Svitolina. She is followed by Marta Kostyuk (26th) and Dayana Yastremskaya (27th). Alexandra Oleynikova also entered the top 100 at number 96.
There are six more representatives of Ukraine in the top 500: Yulia Starodubtseva, Angelina Kalinina, Daria Snigur, Anastasia Soboleva, Veronika Podrez and Katarina Zavatskaya.
The new season starts on January 2 – the United Cup team tournament will be held in Perth and Sydney, Australia. And on the 5th, the WTA 500 tournaments will start in Brisbane and the WTA 250 tournaments in Auckland.
