(Paris) Canadian Carol Zhao advanced to the second qualifying round at the French Open on Tuesday after struggling to beat Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa 6-4, 5-7 and 6-1.
Zhao, 177e in the world, will have an appointment in the next round with the Czech Sara Bejlek, 180e world racket.
For her part, Ontario’s Katherine Sebov will begin her qualifying run later today at Porte d’Auteuil. Sebov, who is ranked 141e in the world, will then face the Croatian Petra Marcinko.
On the men’s side, Quebecer Gabriel Diallo will begin his qualifying journey on French clay against Kazakh Timofey Skatov.
Zhao, Sebov and Diallo are trying to join their compatriots Bianca Andreescu, Leylah Annie Fernandez, Rebecca Marino, Félix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov in the main draw of this second major tournament of the season.
