Swedish tennis player Mikael Ymer was suspended at the ATP tournament in Lyon on Wednesday, where he smashed his racket to the ground on the referee’s tower, according to Tennis Majors.
The incident came after Ymer, 24, asked referee Rogerio Santos to check the ball’s footprint on the ground during his match against France’s Arthur Fils. Despite the fact that when playing on clay, referees usually come down from the tower to check the mark on the court, Santos refused the Swede.
Play continued and on the next play, Fils took Ymer’s serve to take a 6–5 lead. After that, Ymer could not control his emotions and hit the referee’s tower twice with his racket, breaking off the head of the racket from the handle with the second blow.
Ymer, who occupies the 53rd line of the ATP rating, was immediately disqualified. Fils advanced to the quarterfinals, where he defeated Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.
