Marta Kostyuk refused to congratulate the Belarusian tennis player on her convincing victory. And provoked a scandal at Roland Garros.
The very first day of the French Open brought a loud scandal.
The misbehavior of rival Arina Sobolenko provoked French fans to a disgruntled rumble. Even the Belarusian woman had to ask for forgiveness for the scandalous situation.
Easy win for Arina
The match of the first round of “Roland Garros” between Belarusian Arina Sobolenko and Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk was initially considered one of the most interesting on the starting day of the main draw of the tournament. The Belarusian tennis player takes the second place in the WTA ranking, and her opponent is in the 39th position.
Rivals previously crossed paths only once. Last year, at a tournament in Dubai, Arina dealt with Martha in two sets without any problems. But since then, Kostyuk has improved its position in the rankings, climbing almost twenty positions.
A serious struggle was expected from the current confrontation. Arina did not perform well in Rome, dropping out even earlier than her opponent. At the same time, the Belarusian was unable to beat the 120th racket of the world Sofia Kenin in the first round. However, Arina approached the start of Roland Garros in good shape and took out her opponent in one wicket – 6:3; 6:2.
“Sorry guys!”
The defeat in the first meeting of the main draw upset Kostyuk very much. She did not greet her rival. Shaking hands with the judge, Marta immediately went to the bench for things. This behavior offended the fans in the stands. There was a loud roar.
Initially, Arina took it personally. She even made a few demonstrative bows in front of disgruntled fans. Only then, suspecting something was wrong, she asked the audience the reason for the rumble. Upon learning that the fans react this way to Kostyuk’s behavior, Sobolenko patted the fans and even asked for forgiveness.
– Sorry guys! I thought that these angry cries were against me. So I was a little surprised, but then I felt your reaction. So thank you very much for your support. It’s really important,” said the Belarusian tennis player with an embarrassed smile.
Marta tried to smooth out the negative attitude towards herself while leaving for the room under the stands, waving her hand to the audience. But the fans were adamant, they saw her off with even louder rumbles and whistles.
Arina’s rival in the second round of Roland Garros will be compatriot Irina Shimanovich, who defeated the Hungarian Panna Udvardi.
