Tsitsipas: “Proud of Maria, maybe even better”

The 23-year-old commented on Barty’s withdrawal: “When I heard about Barty’s retirement and saw the video, I was really shocked,” going on to answer the question of whether he’d ever thought of something like that, despite being young.

Last year I had a difficult year and I suffered a lot from an elbow injury. It wasn’t always that intense, but it was there. I remember at the ATP Finals in Turin, after the match with Rublev, how bad I felt.

I couldn’t serve, I couldn’t score like before. Nobody could help me. I tried to find solutions but nothing worked. The truth is that thought (retiring from tennis) has crossed my mind but I can’t do it yet. I’m too young to end what I love.

It was a difficult situation and I felt like I couldn’t do anything. I don’t want to be left behind. I don’t want others to develop and I want to stagnate. “I’m happy to have solved the problem and managed to change my attitude and mentality and be more optimistic.”

“Proud of Mary”

Stefanos Tsitsipas referred to Maria Sakkari’s excellent course and her rise to No. 3 in the world.

“I’m proud of Maria. I’m very happy that she managed to do what I did to get 3rd place. I’m just as proud that I’m proud of myself. I think her can make it even better.

I watched them and watched their development. “I’ve seen most of her games, she deserves to be there, she deserves it more than anyone.”

Regarding the new constitution in the Grand Slams with the entry into the super tie-break, but also the receipt of the best-of-5, Tsitsipas emphasized: “For the Grand Slams who like best-of-5. On the other hand, if it went to best-of-3, we would see a greater variety of winners. I think the winners would be different.

As a kid, I liked the best-of-5 that went 18-16, for example. It’s fun to see who gets the first break. Otherwise players are not allowed to play until 06:00 in the morning. It is exhausting.

I remember the case of Kevin Anderson with John Isner (ss Wimbledon) in the semifinals 2 days later ruining the final so…”.

Stefanos Tsitsipas will start his duties at the Miami Open with a doubles match, where he will face Kazakhs Alexander Bublik and Andrei Golubev along with Felithiano Lopez.

At the same time, the Greek tennis player should know his first opponent in the tournament, because on Thursday the match between the German Daniel Altmeier and the American Jay-Jay Wolf will take place.
