The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced that it will not sanction Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic for his comments on Kosovo during the French Open.
Djokovic defeated U.S. representative Aleksandar Kovacevic in the first round of Roland Garros on Monday and after the match wrote on a video camera where players traditionally leave autographs: “Kosovo is the heart of Serbia. Stop the violence.”
– The rules for the conduct of players during a Grand Slam tournament are determined by the Grand Slam regulations issued by the organizer and the relevant regulatory body. There is no provision in these rules that prohibits political statements from the players, L’Equipe quoted the ITF statement.
The ITF noted that it had received a request from the Kosovo Tennis Federation demanding that Djokovic be sanctioned for his actions, and “have forwarded it to the organizations responsible for running the Grand Slam tournaments.”
