Roland Garros: Sviotek reached the third round while idling

Iga Sviontek clinched a 2-0 set against Claire Liu in 90 minutes and advanced to the third round of Roland Garros in a fast-track.

Defending champion Iga Sviontek scored another bagel and took 90 minutes to beat American Claire Liu 6-4, 6-0 (the same result as in the premiere against Kristina Buksa) secures qualification for the “32” stage of Roland Garros.

With that win, the Pole finished 23rd at Roland Garros and suffered just two defeats, but remains undefeated as world no. 1 in Paris with a record of 9-0.

Sviontek ended the game with 24 winners and 23 unforced errors while Liu had 12 and 20 respectively, she erased 8/10 of the American’s break points while on the other hand she managed to capitalize on 6 of the 8 total chances to break.

The champion of 2020 and 2022 had an impressive start, winning the first three games (3-0) after breaking her opponent’s serve twice. However, Liu reacted and equalized the game with 3:3.

But with another break and a difficult serve, Sviontek came to the score of 5:3 and closed the first set a little later with 6:4 to make it 1:0.

In the second set, things got easier for the Pole as Liu struggled with many problems from serve position (she only won 4 points in the whole set), and by breaking the American’s serve three times, she achieved her second win in episode that gave her the win in the 3rd round.

There she meets the Chinese Xin Wang, who in turn defeated the Swede Rebecca Peterson 7:6(5), 6:2.
