Elina SVITOLINA: “Is the last game great? I gave up all my strength

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina (WTA 192) commented on the victory over Anna Blinkova (WTA 56) in the 1/16 final of the French Open in 2023:

“The first set was not very successful for me, I did not move very well, I did not play my best tennis. But I had to keep fighting to find my good tennis. After the first game, I played better in the second set, I really tried to fight. With such magnificent stances, it is impossible not to fight. I just tried my best. Sometimes I didn’t feel very well. But ultimately, playing well under pressure at the end of the game was a special moment. I really appreciate you inspiring me, it was incredible.

Was the last game great? Oh yes, I decided to leave everything on the field. I served in this half of the field for the match, it was a bit difficult against the wind. But in the end I was very happy take that backstroke down the lineI gave 100% on that shot, so I’m very happy to be able to service this game.

What are my expectations? I’m trying to play game after game. I came here with no expectations, it’s really hard to go back on tour after having a baby. But I am very motivated to go further in this tournament. The next opponent is very difficult. Therefore, the main thing is to regain strength and be ready for the next war. These are really, really special moments at Roland Garros. I’ve always loved playing here, as a kid I always watched Roland Garros in Ukraine, apparently this was the only Grand Slam tournament we showed. I’m very happy to have the chance to play here again.”
