“She has a great future.” 16-year-old Russian woman impressed a star from the USA at Roland Garros
Mirra Andreeva lost, but still receives compliments.
After an incomparable start at Roland Garros, everyone seemed to talk about Mirra Andreeva. The 16-year-old athlete easily scattered her rivals, received compliments from world stars and became a star before her eyes. It seemed that this music would be eternal, as Mirra’s countryman Vyacheslav Butusov sang.
But everything comes to an end. And at the fairy tale performed by Andreeva at Roland Garros, he also came. And very hard and painful.
One successful, two failed
Mirra’s rival in the third round of Roland Garros was Corey Gauff from the United States – the sixth racket of the world. Previously, the Russian woman did not beat tennis players from the top 10 – however, she practically did not play matches with them. Of course, Gauff was the favorite, but Andreeva could well count on a positive result.
The first set was the hardest for both tennis players. Mirra led 3:1 and 4:2, lost her advantage, lost, returned to the game … The swing game nevertheless developed in favor of the Russian woman, who was a little more successful in the tie-break – 7:6 (7:5).
Alas, the miracles of Mirra ended there. In the second set, she seemed to be absent from the court. Gauff played as she wanted, and Andreeva only watched helplessly. One game was the maximum for her, above which she could not rise – 1:6.
It seemed that in the third set the Russian woman should remember how to play. Unfortunately, the failed streak continued. All the same errors on the pitch and the reception could not turn the game around. Gauff calmly brought the set to victory (6:1) and took a big step into the 1/8 finals of the French tournament.
“Mirra has a great future”
After the match, Corey paid tribute to her opponent. According to the American, Mirra has great potential, and she will become even stronger.
Mirra is very young, she has a great future ahead of her. I hope you will see many more matches between us,” said Gauff, whose words are quoted by the “Championship”.
It is interesting, by the way, that the WTA dubbed the match between Mirra and Cory the “battle of teenagers”. The American is only 19 years old, and for her age she plays very cool. Maybe in the future we will see a new legendary confrontation between Andreeva Jr. and Gauff?
Despite the defeat, Mirra is still spoken of with enthusiasm and hope. Olympic champion and three-time Grand Slam winner Elena Vesnina, for example, does not see anything wrong with the departure of a young Russian woman.
Mirra has shown incredible tennis this week. She didn’t have the strength. But she gained incredible experience that will be used in subsequent tournaments, Vesnina told the Championship.
The epitome of tennis
And really, once again you should not worry. Yes, the fairy tale of Mirra Andreeva in France is over. Yes, the dreams of some overly optimistic fans about her victory in the women’s bracket are still dreams. But the main thing lies elsewhere.
A new star has appeared in Russia, which can be spoken of in enthusiastic tones. Mirra is the personification of our tennis in three or four years. If she does not stop playing (and this is not believed at all), then by the age of 20 she will certainly become the greatest Russian tennis player since Maria Sharapova.
According to the results of Roland Garros, Mirra, by the way, will get as close as possible to the top 100 of the WTA rating. Under certain circumstances, it can even enter the top 100. And it’s very cool!
