Japanese-Indonesian duo Miyu Kato / Aldila Sutjiadi were disqualified from the third round match of women’s doubles on Sunday.
In the second set of the match against Sara Sorribes Tormo and Maria Bouzkova (Spain/Czech Republic), Miyu Kato knocked the ball over to the server after a rally and accidentally hit the ball girl. The opponents immediately asked the referee if this meant a disqualification, but said that they received a negative answer because the Japanese did not do this on purpose and the ball girl was not injured.
A few minutes later, the coaches took the field and talked to the participants of the match. As a result, Miya Kato and Aldila Sutjiadi were removed from the match, after which the Japanese woman cried.
On Monday, it was learned that Miya Kato was stripped of all prize money and points for the tournament.
Note that in 2020 Novak Djokovic was disqualified from the US Open for such an infraction.
