CONTAVITE: What Sobolenko said has nothing to do with reality
Estonian tennis player Anette Contaveitis (WTA 78) commented on the words of Arina Sobolenko (WTA 2) about the war in Ukraine:
“There’s a lot of talk about it in the locker room, but it’s normal for me. We’re dealing with a war, not some kind of political conflict. It creates tension between tennis players, it affects our relationship.
It is naive to think that we are only involved in sports and have nothing to do with politics.
Sobolenko? Maybe he says he really thinks, but it has nothing to do with reality, what really happened.
Suspension? As players, we cannot influence this. The decision rests with WTA, ATP and individual major tournaments. Whether I accept it or not, nothing will change. But I can say that I understand very well why Ukrainian tennis players want this.”
Earlier, Sobolenko refused to answer a direct question about the war in Ukraine, and also stated that he no longer supports the self-proclaimed President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko.
