(Paris) He’s back home: Novak Djokovic, with his 23e title in Grand Slam, finds Monday “its” place of N.1 world, for a 388e week, in an ATP ranking where another tennis legend, Rafael Nadal, disappears from the top 100.
Since turning professional in 2003, ‘Nole’, 36, has held the position of best player in the world for more than seven cumulative years, breaking in February the record, men and women combined, held by the German Steffi Graff (377 weeks).
If Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal no longer challenge him for the throne, it is the young Spanish prodigy Carlos Alcaraz who now disputes his place as world number one. As such, the Serb progresses by two ranks and benefits in the new classification from his victory in the semi-final on Friday against the Murcian, paralyzed by cramps and who falls to the 2e place, but also the early elimination of Daniil Medvedev.
Angry with Parisian clay, the Russian, beaten from the 1er lap, back one length, in third position.
Again defeated in the final of a Grand Slam, like last year, the Norwegian Casper Ruud narrowly retains his 4e place, with only 40 points ahead of the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (5e).
Behind this quintet, the changes are few: eliminated from the 1er tour in Paris, Quebecer Félix Auger-Aliassime leaves the top 10 (11e-1) in favor of the Russian Karen Khachanov who, on the contrary, rather shone during the fortnight (defeat in the quarters against Djokovic).
Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo also reaps the benefits of his quarter-final and joins the top 20in last place (+3).
Very far from these peaks, the tumble was expected, but remains vertiginous: winner a year ago of his 22e Grand Slam title on 14e at Roland-Garros, Rafael Nadal pays his package due to injury and loses 121 places. The Mallorcan is now 136e and this fall is expected to continue given the duration of his unavailability (several months).
