Sakkari won 2-0 sets against Wang and advanced to the second round of the Nottingham Open
Maria Sakkari defeated Wang 2-0 in her first game of the year on grass to advance to the second round of the Nottingham Open.
Maria Sakkari’s debut in the grass season was successful. The 27-year-old Greek won 2-0 sets against Wang and advanced to the second round of the Nottingham Open.
Sak won the first set with ease, but in the second the two athletes settled their differences in the tiebreak where the Greek champion was more composed and claimed the win.
In the next round comes Maria Sakkari meets the winner of the pair between Swann and Cornet.
The match: The two athletes nervously entered the court and tried to find a footing. The one who found her the quickest was Maria Sakkari. The 27-year-old Greek, who has won four games in a row, turned the 2-2 into a 6-2 and finished the first set.
What was impressive about Sakkari in the first set was that while she only managed 48% of her first serves, she had a whopping 67% of the points after her second. That’s what she got the set for.
The second set started with a quick break from Wang, who took a 2-0 lead. Sakkari reacted quickly and equalized the set for a 3-2 lead.
The two athletes then held their serve without any problems until the twelfth game. There, Sakkari managed a triple break point but failed to convert it, sending the two athletes into the tiebreak.
Wang was the one who managed to take a lead even by three points (5-2), but Sakkari was calmer and managed to turn around and finish the set and game 7-6 (6).
