27-year-old ex-world second racket announces retirement
Estonian tennis player Anett Kontaveit has announced that she will end her professional career after Wimbledon 2023.
“Today I am announcing the end of my career. After several visits to the doctor and consultations with my healthcare team, I was informed that I have lumbar disc degeneration in my back. This does not allow to continue full training or competition. So continuing to perform at the highest level in an area with such intense competition. not possible.
Tennis has given and taught me a lot and for that I am very grateful. It was important to me to carry the Estonian flag to the tennis courts and to be able to play in front of my fans and fans around the world. After my last effort as a professional tennis player, I am ready for new challenges – to enjoy the game and compete at Wimbledon with all my might. Thank you all for your continued support,” Kontaveit wrote on Instagram.
27-year-old Kontaveit became the world’s second racket in singles. Played the final in the 2021 Final Tournament. The 27-year-old Tallinn native has won six WTA tournaments in singles and reached the 2012 US Open junior final.
