Olympic champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov criticized the decision of the organizers of Wimbledon for the strict criteria for allowing athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in the tournament.
Kafelnikov took part in the discussion on social networks. One of the users posted a screenshot with the admission rules and highlighted a paragraph in it, which says that tennis players from Russia and Belarus should not receive state funding in order to have a chance to play in the tournament.
“I think this explains why quite a few Russian juniors who have the opportunity to compete at Wimbledon miss it,” she wrote.
— Idiots! Most parents of juniors do not have their own funds to pay for their children’s trips to tournaments. Pathetic,” Kafelnikov replied.
Wimbledon will take place from 3 to 16 July. Russians and Belarusians were excluded from participation last year.
