Elina SVITOLINA: “It’s always a pleasure for me to play against Venus”
On Monday, July 3, the 1/64th final match of Wimbledon 2023 was played with the Ukrainian tennis player. Elina Svitolina (WTA 76) and American Venus Williams (WTA 558). The match ended 6:4 and 6:3 in favor of Ukraine.
After the end of the meeting, Elina commented on the victory:
“It’s always a pleasure for me to play against Venus, we’ve met on the field many times, in almost every major. I had to work hard to win this game. The turf requires a lot of strength from you, really, you need good knee work to squat because Venus it plays very fast.
It was a special moment for me to play against a sports legend in front of these spectators on such a special field today. These are great feelings. I’m very happy to be back on tour so quickly and playing in a major. My husband and daughter support me at home.
You are playing on this court where everything started in the history of tennis… You imagine moments like this, it’s incredible. And moreover, winning the match is a doubly great victory.”
In the next round of the competition, Elina will face Elise Mertens.
