PHOTOGRAPH. Two matches at Wimbledon 2023 were suspended due to activists. What happened?
Two matches of the 1/64th final of Wimbledon 2023 were interrupted by environmental activists.
On 5 July, the match started on field 18. So Shimabukuro: Grigor Dimitrov. In the middle of the meeting, two activists from the Just Stop Oil movement rushed to the field and scattered orange confetti. They carried these in boxes containing the official puzzles of the tournament depicting the Center Court. Presumably the confetti was bought from the tournament store.
The two men were promptly removed from the field by the police, but the audience applauded. The duel between Dimitrov and Simabukoro ended in Bulgaria’s favor with a score of 6:1, 6:2, 6:1.
After the end of the match, the duel of the next throw began. Cathy Boulter – Daria Saville. The violators returned to court and staged another protest, scattering confetti.
Just Stop Oil is a UK-based environmental activist group. Using civil resistance, vandalism and direct action, the group wants the British government to suspend new licenses and fossil fuel production.
