Kostyuk: “During breaks, I just cried. I’m definitely going to celebrate a bit today.”
Ukrainian tennis player Martha Kostyuk (WTA 36) commented on the victory over the 8th racket of the world Maria Sakkari (Greece) In Round 1 of Wimbledon 2023:
“First of all, I would like to thank our audience for their support and for continuing to watch this match despite the rain interruption. I’ve probably never experienced a match interrupted twice before so this is the first experience of this kind.
Every time I went to the time-out, I felt different emotions because I couldn’t get the ball onto the field. How did I try to concentrate during breaks? I just cried during breaks. I tried to solve everything. Maybe this helped me because I fell short on the score, tried to get back into the game. I just kept fighting.
I want to thank my team, my mom Caroline, my coach Andrew, everyone who supported me. I couldn’t have done this without you. These last few days have not been easy. I don’t know how I’m going to feel tomorrow, but I’m definitely going to celebrate a little today.”
In the next round of the Grass Major, Kostyuk will face match winner Alison Risk – Paula Badosa.
