Emotionally charged after her Wimbledon exit, Maria Sakkari broke down in tears during the press conference.

Maria Sakkari (No. 8) lost 2-1 sets to Kostiuk (0-6, 7-5, 6-2) with an upset in a match that was twice interrupted and eliminated in the first round of Wimbledon.

The Greek tennis player was in poor mental health and couldn’t hold back her tears at the press conference.

“The result doesn’t matter, I lost the match. 6-0 means nothing. The other girl is top 40 in the world, she won’t give me the match 6-0, 6-0. She’ll come back and play good tennis and I just lost the match.

When asked about her emotional state, she actually answered the journalists with tears in her eyes:

Wonderful. How should I feel? You see me crying, how do I feel? I’ve lost my last two Grand Slam debuts. How am I supposed to feel? I don’t think it’s the right question when you see someone crying.

In the last two years I’ve had big problems in the Grand Slams. After the semifinals at the US Open, I didn’t have good results. Maybe I’m putting a lot of pressure on myself, maybe because I want to be in the top 8 again. It’s hard to deal with, it’s hard.

It’s uncertain (expectations) and hard to say at the moment as I’ve lost in two first round Grand Slams. You lose the opportunity to earn points, although there are still many big tournaments and even a week can change everything. The goal is to finish the season in the top 8, but after the last two Slams it’s far for me.
