The doctors worked quickly.

Daniil Medvedev set a personal record at Wimbledon 2023, reaching the quarterfinals. But in the fourth round match with the participation of our tennis player, there were not only cool sports emotions. The game had to be stopped in full swing for emergency medical assistance.

Taken under the arms in the midst of the match

Match 1 / 8 finals of Wimbledon for Daniil Medvedev was a cakewalk. The Russian tennis player turned out to be stronger than the Czech Jiri Legechka in all respects. The game on the main court of the tournament did not last even an hour and a half.

The match could have taken even less time if not for the incident in the midst of the second set. With the score 3:1 in favor of Medvedev, the judge on the tower urgently stopped the match.

The reason for the unexpected pause in the official broadcast of the game was not named. Only some time later, the media reported that the elderly fan, who was sitting on the podium behind Legechka’s back, had sharply worsened her health.

The meeting had to be stopped for ten minutes. All this time, doctors provided the woman with the necessary assistance. Due to a long pause on the center court, a tense situation reigned. Even tennis players were nervous. Medvedev bit his lips and shifted from foot to foot.

It’s good that help arrived in time. The fan left the podium on her own: the doctors only accompanied her, just in case, taking her by the arms. The audience supported the woman with applause.

Incredible accuracy

It was not the only forced pause in the match. At the end of the first set, Legechka needed a medical time-out. However, the help of a physiotherapist was enough to restore Jiri’s ankle. It took more than five minutes to put the Czech in order.

Funny, albeit short-lived, pause also happened in the ninth game of the first set. The ball, after Medvedev’s serve, bounced off Legechka’s racket at high speed and flew towards the fans. The episode elicited laughter from the audience. The thing is that the ball landed right in the fan’s glass of beer!

The game ended after the second set. Ankle problems bothered the Czech for the rest of the match. Jiri decided not to go to the third game, recognizing an early defeat. Winning this crumpled match allowed Medvedev to reach the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time in his career.
