The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) did the right thing by making a statement on the handshakes of Russian, Belarusian and Ukrainian tennis players, Belarusian Arina Sobolenko believes.
Earlier, Ukrainian Elina Svitolina and Belarusian Victoria Azarenka did not shake hands at the end of the Wimbledon fourth round match, after which some of the stands booed Azarenka. In its statement, the WTA noted that it respects the position of Ukrainian tennis players.
— I mean that the players understand everything. I saw this statement yesterday. They made that statement, which is really right of them. I think people also need to know what is happening and why there are no handshakes between Ukrainian, Russian and Belarusian players. It’s good that there is such a statement. I really hope that no one else will face such a reaction from the fans,” said Sobolenko, quoted by ASAP Sport.
On Wednesday, Sobolenko defeated American Madison Keys 2:6, 4:6 and reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon, where she will meet Ons Jaber from Tunisia.
