Alkarath: His ten incredible successes after winning Wimbledon
With the victory in Wimbledon, Carlos Alcarath managed to immortalize his name alongside records, but also achievements that few have equaled.
It may have been around two months (72 days to be precise) that Carlos Alcarath turned 20, but he has already achieved great things in tennis.
The Spaniard won Wimbledon against Novak Djokovic on Sunday afternoon, ending the Serb’s dominance in recent years.
At the same time, he managed to put his name next to it in records, but also in feats few have equaled in the open era of tennis.
In particular, Carlos Alcarath was…
- The youngest tennis player to win the US Open and Wimbledon.
- He became the first since Pete Sampras in 1994 to defeat three consecutive top 10 players and win Wimbledon. He defeated Rooney (No. 6), Medvedev (No. 3) and Djokovic (No. 2) back-to-back.
- The first tennis player to beat Djokovic at Wimbledon in 2195 days. The last one to do so was Tomas Berdych in the 2017 quarterfinals.
- The second since Andy Murray at the 2012 US Open to defeat Djokovic in a five-set Grand Slam final.
- The third youngest winner of Wimbledon after Boris Becker (he had won it twice before the age of 20) and Bjorn Borg.
- Third youngest player to win six titles in one year in the last forty years. The first was Agassi in 1988 and the second was Rafael Nadal in 2005.
- Third Spaniard to win Wimbledon after Manuel Santana (1966) and Rafael Nadal (2008, 2010).
- The fourth Spaniard to win more than one Grand Slam. First up, of course, is Nadal with 22, followed by Santana with 4 and Bruguera with two.
- The fifth to win at least two Grand Slam titles before the age of 21, after Villarreal, Borg, Becker and Nadal.
- The fifth Wimbledon victory in the last 20 years. The others who have succeeded are of course Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray.
