Alkarath: “Before the final I thought I couldn’t beat Djokovic”
Carlos Alcarath told a press conference that his win over Novak Djokovic was the happiest moment of his life, admitting that before the game he believed he could beat the Serb, but now he thinks differently.
Carlos Alcarath is the new king of Wimbledon after beating Novak Djokovic 3-2 sets to win the historic tournament for the first time in his career.
The two tennis players treated tennis fans to a fantastic final which the 20-year-old prevailed after an epic match. This is Carlitos’ second Grand Slam title. in as many finals as he has competed in.
“It’s definitely the happiest moment of my life and that’s not going to change for a long time. Beating Novak and winning Wimbledon was a dream I had from the start. That’s why it’s the most important moment in my life.
It’s unbelievable that I managed to beat Novak, who hasn’t lost on this pitch for 10 years and is in the best phase of his career. It’s something I will never forget.
It’s important for the new generation because when they see me beat him they’ll think they can do it too. It’s great for both me and the young tennis players.” Alkarath first said at the press conference.
Referring to the battle they fought at Roland Garros where Djokovic won, Alcarath said among other things: “I’m a completely different player. I became very ‘grown up’ after that moment. I learned a lot from this game.”
I prepared myself mentally differently and managed to cope with my pressure and my nerves. Obviously, grass is different from the ground too. I think it was the mental part that allowed me to stay in the five sets.”
What does the future hold and what does it say about his possible fights with Djokovic in future tournaments? “Before this game I thought I couldn’t beat Novak. But after this epic fight, I think differently. I think I’m ready to play five sets against him and keep going physically and mentally.
