Chinese tennis player Zhang Shuai refused to continue the first round match against the Hungarian Amarissa Tot at the tournament in Budapest due to a conflict with her opponent and referee.

With the score at 5:5 in the first set, Zhang Shuai (2nd seed) hit the ball into the line, but the linesman called out. The referee on the tower came down to the court and confirmed that the ball was over the line. The Chinese woman was outraged by this decision and asked to call the tournament supervisor. After one draw, Tot deliberately erased the mark from the ball, although Zhang Shuai continued to appeal to the referee.

Subsequently, Zhang Shuai took a medical time-out, after which she decided to refuse to continue the fight. According to the media, a 34-year-old Chinese woman had a panic attack.

Zhang Shuai is ranked 28th by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
