The Polish Minister of Sports announced that the Russians boycotted their matches at the tournament in Warsaw.
Polish Minister of Sports and Tourism Kamil Bortnikuk shared his expectations from the WTA 250 tournament to be held in Warsaw next week.
“I do not agree with the policies of the WTA and ATP regarding the participation of Russian and Belarusian players in tournaments, just as the Wimbledon leadership does not agree with them. Russian and Belarusian players are expected to participate in the tournament in Warsaw, so I decided to refuse to participate in matches with their participation. Also, because of this moment, I did not see the opportunity to provide financial support for the organization of the tournament.
I really want Iga Sviontek to reach the final and win the tournament, I will be very happy to participate in the matches with her participation. At the same time, I would really like that he didn’t have to play against the Russians or the Belarusians. If that happens, even if Iga reaches the final, unfortunately I will not be on the courts of the tournament.”
