Novak Djokovic will skip the National Bank Open

(Toronto) Serbian Novak Djokovic, the second player in the world, has announced that he will not participate in the National Bank Tennis Open to be held in Toronto from August 5 to 13.

Tennis Canada confirmed the news in a press release late Sunday afternoon. According to the statement, Djokovic withdrew due to fatigue.

Djokovic’s withdrawal ensures that American Christopher Eubanks will automatically be admitted to the main draw.

Eubanks distinguished himself at the recent Wimbledon Open tennis tournament by reaching the quarter-finals. Along the way, he notably knocked out fifth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas and 12-seeded Cameron Norrie.e.

Aged 36 and holder of 23 Grand Slam singles titles, Djokovic took part in the final at Wimbledon last Sunday. He lost in five sets against the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

If he had come to Toronto, Djokovic would have been aiming for a fifth career title at the National Bank Open. His last triumph dates back to 2016, in Toronto, when he took the measure of the Japanese Kei Nishikori.

“I have always enjoyed my stays in Canada, but after talking with my team, we think it’s the right decision to make,” commented Djokovic in the official press release from Tennis Canada.

“I really hope to have more opportunities to play in Canada, and in Toronto, in front of great spectators,” he added.

Despite Djokovic’s withdrawal, the men’s singles draw in Toronto is expected to feature 41 of the top 42 players in the world.

Australian Open A first round victory for Madison Keys, the defending champion

(Melbourne) Defending champion Madison Keys defeated Ukrainian Oleksandra Oliynykova 7-6 (6), 6-1 in the first round of the Australian Open on Tuesday.

Keys, seeded No. 9, found herself in difficulty on the Rod Laver Arena court, trailing 4-0 in the first set.

Oliynykova, playing her first Grand Slam main draw match, also led 4-0 in a tiebreaker.

However, she missed two set points, giving Keys the opportunity to win the set.

Oliynykova destabilized Keys, especially in the first set, with high lobs that forced the American back far behind the baseline.

The Ukrainian’s solid defense and atypical play allowed her to stay in the match.

However, she was gradually overwhelmed by Keys’ power and rhythm.

“I was nervous at first,” Keys admitted. Oleksandra is a fierce competitor, she definitely made things difficult for me. I am very happy to have turned the tide and continued on my way. »

Ninth in the world, Keys takes part in a 50e major tournament, including 12 appearances at the first stage of the Grand Slam.

Since losing to Zheng Jie in 2012, she has won 11 consecutive first-round matches in Melbourne.

On Tuesday evening, Hugo Gaston of France will play Jannik Sinner of Italy, the tournament champion in 2024 and 2025.
