(Washington) Ontarian Denis Shapovalov said Tuesday that he withdrew from the Open Mubadala Citi in order to recover his health.

“Hello everyone, my knee needs more time to heal so unfortunately I won’t be able to play in Washington next week. I will miss the spectators at the Mubadala Citi Open, but hopefully I will be able to see you on the cement soon,” he wrote on social media.

Shapovalov has not played since losing in four sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, 6-3 to Russia’s Roman Safiullin in the round of 16 at Wimbledon earlier this month.

The Canadian, who is at 22e world-ranked, seemed to be hampered by a knee problem and struggled to finish the last three runs. By the time he left the court after his backhand, you could see he was limping.

The question now is whether he will recover in time to compete in the men’s National Bank Open, which takes place in Toronto from August 7-13.
