Sensational defeat of the Russian tennis player in the USA! Tribunes openly laughed
Veronika Kudermetova lost to 43-year-old Venus Williams.
Perhaps the sensation of the year took place at the WTA 1000 tournament in Cincinnati, USA. Russian Veronika Kudermetova managed to lose to 43-year-old Venus Williams, leading in two sets with a huge advantage. Such defeats are inexplicable: it is difficult to understand what happened to the 16th racket of the world.
But at first, nothing foreshadowed trouble!
Incomprehensible failure
The older sisters in the Kudermetov and Williams families met each other for the first time in their professional careers. The favorite, of course, was Veronika: the rating, age and, on the whole, a more stable game required. Venus now plays purely for herself and came to Cincinnati at the invitation of the organizers, thanks to her glorious past.
In the first set, the advantage of the Russian woman was noticeable to the naked eye. Williams stood still more than she played tennis, missing attacks over and over again. Set quickly reached the score 4:1, after which Veronica suddenly began to hit on outs and make mistakes on the pitch.
Venus, sensing the weakness of the opponent, turned on and began to win back the backlog. Of course, it was not without the help of home stands, who helped the American in every possible way. Veronica seemed to have stopped playing, helplessly watching the transformation on the other side of the court. As a result, for Williams 1:4 turned into 6:4 – even the most ardent fans of the tennis legend hardly believed in such an outcome.
Weather for Williams
In the second set, Veronica again took the initiative. The Russian woman led 4:0 and 5:1 – it would seem that a player of this level should bring the matter to its logical conclusion …
However, everything went wrong again. The beginnings of a radical fracture appeared when the score was 4:1 in favor of Veronica. It began to rain, and the hard surface became too wet. Venus slipped her feet, and she turned to the referee with a request to stop the game. However, he ignored her call and left the tennis players on the court. Two games later, when Veronica was leading 5:2, the referee nevertheless took the girls to the locker rooms: a heavy downpour began.
Half an hour later, the match resumed with a 180-degree turn. The rain washed away not only the dust from hard, but the whole game of Kudermetova. Again, inexplicable mistakes, misses and hits on outs – everything that the audience observed in the first set was repeated in the second. By some miracle, Veronika crawled up to two set points, but she couldn’t convert them.
But Venus was unstoppable. Despite her age, she retained the sense of blood inherent in predators. With her energy, she completely crushed Kudermetova, whom it was a pity to look at. At some point, the stands even laughed at the Russian woman when she made a mistake on the pitch several times in a row. Williams bounced back from 1:5, taking six games in a row! 6:4, 7:5 – nothing but a sensation.
Victory with minimal preparation
For Venus, the victory over a player from the top 20 was the first in four years. In August 2019, the eldest of the Williams sisters defeated the Dutchwoman Kiki Burtens, at that time the fifth racket of the world. Since then, the leaders of the rating have not obeyed her.
After the match with Kudermetova, the American smiled at the stands and pirouetted on the court. In an interview with the WTA press service, she admitted that she had little time to prepare, and this made the victory even more valuable. Venus will be able to consolidate her success in the second round – Chinese Zheng Qinwen or Alexandra Sasnovich from Belarus will become her rival.
Kudermetova, in turn, after a handshake on duty, grabbed her bag and almost ran away from the court. Such a defeat was clearly not part of her plans. Now the main thing is to draw conclusions in order to reduce inexplicable failures to nothing.
